Iceland/Germany's Arstidir Lifsins have returned with a new recording which continues the pagan black metal style of previous releases and this is a review of their 2020 album "Saga á tveim tungum II: Eigi fjǫll né firðir" which will be released in May by Van Records.
Nature sounds start off the album along with some acoustic guitars a few seconds later which also adds in touches of folk music while classical instruments are also utilized at times. Most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with some spoken word parts also being added into certain sections of the recording
On the third track the music starts going into a heavier direction while also retaining the folk elements. During the faster sections of the songs a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which gives the recording more of a raw feeling along with a great amount of grim sounding black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as some tracks also adding in a small amount of clean pagan vocals and choirs. The riffs also add in some melodies at times and when guitar solos and leads are finally utilized they are done in a very melodic style. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Skaldic, Edda poetry and historical battles that are described in Kings' sagas.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Astdir Lifsins and if you are a fan of pagan black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sem járnklær nætr dragask nærri" "Er hin gullna stjarna skýjar slóðar rennr rauð" and "Ek sá halr at Hóars veðri hǫsvan serk Hrísgrísnis bar". 8out of 10.
