Ayyur are a band from Tunisia that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a very atmospheric and avant garde form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 ep "Balkarnin" which was released as a joint effort between Dead Red Queen Records and Bad Moon Rising.
Ambient style synths and soundscapes start off the ep before going into a heavier direction while the guitar solos and leads are done in a very melodic style. Atmospheric elements are also added into the heavy parts of the music along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the music also has its ritualistic moments. Melodic chants can also be heard briefly along with the songs also getting very avant garde at times, both of the tracks are very long and epic in length as well as all of the music sticking to either a slow or mid tempo direction and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
On this recording Ayyur takes their music into more of an avant garde and atmospheric direction which is different from their previous release. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Berber Mythology, Folklore and Ancient Mysticism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ayyur and if you are a fan of avant garde and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Balkanin I". 8 out of 10.
