Crooked Horns are a band from Sweden that plays a mixture of black, death and heavy metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "The Metamorphosis".
A very dark, heavy and melodic sound starts off the album while epic sounding synths are also used briefly. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
A great portion of the tracks are long and epic in length along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style as well as all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them.
Elements of death and traditional metal can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing as well as the music also adding in a more modern Swedish style. One of the tracks is also a brief classical guitar instrumental before returning back to a heavier direction as well as some of the riffing also adding in touches of black'n'roll and thrash metal.
As the album progresses Gregorian chants and clean singing can also be heard briefly along with some acoustic guitars and ritualistic chants also being used for a few seconds on a later track. The production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover Occultism and Darkness themes.
In my opinion Crooked Horns are a very great sounding mixture of black, death and heavy metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Vargr" "To Become, As One" and "In Visions - In Dreams". 8 out of 10.
