Plaguewielder are a band from Ohio that started out in more of a blackened sludge/doom metal direction and on this recording have evolved more into a punk influenced black'n'roll direction and this is a review of t heir 2019 ep "Suffering From Self Inflicted Wounds" which will be released during the end of November on digipack and bandcamp by Disorder Designs/Recordings with the cassette version coming out in January 2020 by Akashic Envoy Records.
A very dark, heavy and melodic sound starts out the ep along with some grim sounding black metal screams a few seconds later. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling as well as showing a more traditional approach to the genre,
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the second track also introduces elements of hardcore punk and d beat onto the recording. Touches of black'n'roll can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording along with the music also adding a more modern approach to black metal and they also bring in a cover of G.G Allin's "Bite It You Scum" and they close the ep with an acoustic track which also adds in some semi clean yet rough vocals.
On this recording Plaguewielder move away from the blackened sludge and doom approach of previous releases and goes into more of a punk and black'n'roll influenced style of black metal. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover dark and violent themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Plaguewielder and if you are a fan of punk influenced black'n'roll, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Do You Hear Them Howling" and "Coffin Filled". 8 out of 10.
