Minenwerfer are a band from Sacramento. California that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording goes more into a war influenced form of atmospheric black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Alpenpasse" which will be released on Halloween by Purity Through Fire.
A very dark sound starts off the album while most of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Atmospheric elements can also be heard in some parts of the music along with some spoken word samples from World War I also being utilized at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be utilized.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the songs more of a raw feeling while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. Most of the guitar solos and leads are done in a very melodic style along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with some clean playing also being added into some parts of the music as well as the second track also showing the music returning to the raw aggression that was presented on previous recordings and also adds in some chaotic sounding guitar leads,
Clean vocals can also be heard briefly on a couple of tracks as the alum progresses and one song also adds in samples of WWI era German music and acoustic guitars onto the recording and also gives the music more of a progressive feeling and also returns on a later track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of German and English and cover World War I themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Minenwerfer and if you are a fan of aggressive and atmospheric war themed black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dragging The Dead Through Mountain Passes" and "Tiroler Edelweiss". 8/5 out of 10.
