Voltumna are a band from Italy that has been featured before in this zine and plays a mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Ciclope" which will be released in December by Extreme Metal Music.
A very dark and epic sounding synth interlude starts off the album before adding in a very powerful sounding bass guitar which also takes the music into a heavier direction. Vocals also bring in a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark and melodic style while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Synths also return on some of the later tracks along with the tremolo picking also giving the songs more of a raw feeling. The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody along with a couple of tracks also adding in some elements of electronic music.
Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly as well as the music also having its technical moments and as the album progresses a brief use of clear vocals can also be heard and the music is also very different from the previous album that was released in 2017, one track also adds in a small amount of clean playing which is also an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Etruscan Paganism, Apocryphal Transcripts emerging from the dawn of time, forgotten civilizations and imaginary legends handed down through oral tradition and native folklore.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Voltumna and if you are a fan of black and death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Collapsed Island" "Divine Bloodline" and :When Giants Walked Upon The Earth". 8 out of 10.
