Starless Domain are a band from the United States that has recently had an album reviewed in this zine and plays a musical style they refer to being as 'deep field' black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "ALMA" which will be released cassette October 18th as a joint effort between Crown And Throne Ltd and Tartarus Records.
Ambient style synths and soundscapes start off the album and they also mix in with the heavier sections of the music at times. At times the music also captures a cinematic atmosphere while the only track that is presented on the recording is over 44 minutes in length and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with some demonic voices also being added into the background at times as well as the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with some repetitive riffing also being used for a few minutes at a time as well as all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them, as the album progresses the music also gets more experimental sounding. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the song themes focus on the emptiness between galaxies.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Starless Domain and if you are a fan of ambient and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this cassette. 8 out of 10.
