Ceremonial Castings are a band from Battle Ground, Washington that plays a musical style they describe as being deathphonic black metal and this is a review of their 2013 ep "Reign In Hell (Tribute To Jeff Hanneman)" which was released by Dead Moon Records and only contains Slayer covers.
"Black Magic" begins with some ambient sounding synths and chanting and then some melodic guitar riffs and d rums kick in as well as some heavier riffing while keeping the synths in the background and then the grim sounding high pitched black metal screams kick in along with some deep death metal growls as well as some attempts at power metal style screams and halfway through the song guitar solos and leads start coming in for a few seconds.
"Born Of Fire" begins with some powerful drums and heavy guitar riffs before the grim black metal vocals start kicking in along with some high pitched elements and synths which leads up to some blast beats and death metal growls and a few seconds later guitar solos and leads start coming in and out of the song along with some more blast beats as well as some slower riffing being utilized in certain sections of the song as well as a brief use of spoken word parts.
"South Of Heaven" begins with some slow and dark guitar riffs as well as some guitar leads and then the drums and synths kick in and a few seconds spoken word parts and bass guitars make their presence known in the song which leads up to some grim black metal vocals and as the song moves on the guitar leads start coming in and out.
"Postmortem" begins with some heavy guitar and bass riffs along with some drums and then t he synths start kicking in which leads up to the grim black metal vocals and towards the end the song starts adding in some faster elements along with some shouting style vocals and the song closes with thunder sounds.
"Raining Blood" begins with thunder sounds and drums before the dark and melodic guitar riffs start kicking in before going into a faster direction along with some blast beats and a mixture of shouting and grim black metal vocals and halfway through the song there is a brief use of spoken word parts before the synths are added in which leads up to some guitar solos and leads a few seconds later and the song closes with the sounds of rain.
Song lyric s cover Satanism, and Darkness themes, while the production has avery strong, powerful, heavy and dark sound.
In my opinion this is a great sounding recording from Ceromonial Castings and if you are a fan of Slayer and synth orientated black metal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Black Magic' and "Raining Blood". RECOMMENDED.
