Ihsahn is a solo artist from Norway that uses session musicians and has been featured before in this zine with a musical style that I would describe as being an experimental and progressive form of black metal and this is a review of his 2013 album "Das Seelenbrechen" which was released by Candlelight Records.
"Hilber" begins with some heavy and dark guitar riffs, drums and black metal style vocals along with some guitar leads and then the synths kick in and bring in avant garde, progressive and classical elements which also leads to the guitar riffing getting a lot more melodic along with some leads and solos and midway through the song the music goes more into a classical direction while having elements of noise in the background before getting heavy again.
"Regen" begins with some soft synths and a few seconds melodic clean singing vocals make their way into the song and a minute later drums start coming into the song which also leads up to some heavy guitar riffs and black metal vocals while also keeping around the clean singing in certain sections and the song also starts adding in more orchestra elements and towards the end there is a brief use of guitar solos and leads.
"naCI" begins with some heavy guitar riffs and drums before adding in some synths and clean singing along with some clean parts and progressive elements and a minute later guitar leads start coming in an out of the song along with some powerful sounding bass guitars and psychedelic elements.
''Pulse" begins with some synths and programmed drum beats and a few seconds later some melodic vocals make their way into the song and as times moves on the music starts getting a lot more diverse along with a small amount of clean guitars and towards the end they get slightly heavier with some melodic riffing.
"Tacit 2" begins with some black metal vocals, heavy bass guitars and drums and as times goes on by the music starts adding in a lot more distorted elements along with some drone sound effects.
"Tacit" begins with some heavy guitar riffs, drums and black metal vocals along with some synths and after awhile the music starts adding in some avant garde elements along with some saxophones and you can hear the bass guitars in the background.
"Rec" begins with some acoustic guitars, melodic vocals and synths and after a while drums, percussion's and heavy guitar riffs are added into the song and towards the end there are some black metal vocals and orchestra elements.
"M" begins with some synths and after a minute spoken word parts are added into the song along with some avant garde elements and then some heavy guitar riffs and leads along with some drums which leads up to some melodic vocals.
'Sub Alter" begins with some clean guitars along with some synths and after a minute melodic vocals make their way into the song and as time goes on by drum beats are added into the song and towards the end psychedelic elements are added in.
"See" begins with some experimental sound effects that also bring in elements of avant garde and drone and after a couple of minutes whispers make their presence known and started adding in black metal elements after a few seconds before also adding in some drum beats
Song lyrics cover dark themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy and professional sound where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ihsahn and if you are a fan of this artist, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hilber" "Pulse" "Rec" and "See". RECOMMENDED BUY.
