Winternehst are a band from France that plays an atmospheric and instrumental form of post black metal with elements of ambient and this is a review of their self released and self titled 20 album.
"Les Adieux" begins with some soft acoustic guitar playing and serves as an intro for the album.
"Raven" begins with some atmospheric black metal guitar riffs and drum beats and after awhile the bass guitars get more powerful and there are some post rock style melodic guitar leads that come in and out of the song before going into a slower direction and then into some fast and primitive riffing along with some blast beats and the guitar leads making a return and the song closes with some bass leads.
"Waves" begins with some soft acoustic guitar playing that utilizes both finger picking and full chords along with some synths before the heavy guitar and bass riffs kick in as well as some drums and after a couple of minutes melodic elements are added into the song which also leads up to some guitar solos and leads before returning to the acoustic sections while also adding in more post rock elements which leads up to the music getting heavy again.
"Divigations" begins wit h some heavy guitar riffs, melodic leads, drums and synths and after awhile the guitar riffing starts utilizing some melody and halfway through the song the music goes into a more atmospheric black metal direction and the song closes with some bass guitars.
''Souvenirs" begins with some slow black metal guitar riffs and drums and you can hear the bass guitars in the background before the melodic guitar leads start kicking in and the song stays in an atmospheric post black metal direction and towards the end there is a brief use of primitive guitar riffing.
"Elevation" begins with some soft acoustic guitar playing which leads up to some drums and post rock guitar leads with some powerful bass guitars in the background which leads up to the song going into a more melodic direction and a few seconds alter heavy black metal guitar riffs start coming into the song which also utilize some primitive elements along with some blast beats from the drums and melodic elements and then they go into a slower direction and towards the end t he music returns back to the acoustic sections.
Song themes cover darkness and nature, while the production has a very strong, powerful, and heavy sound for being a self released recording where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording along with a couple of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Winternehst a re a very great sounding instrumental, atmospheric, post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Raven" and "Elevation". RECOMMENDED BUY.
