Barren Oak are a band from Boston, Massachusetts that plays a very experimental form of depressive black metal that uses 5 and 7 string bass as a lead instrument instead of regular guitars and this is a review of their self released 2013 ep "Dead To All Sensory Perception".
"Blissful Self Violence" begins with some heavy bass guitar riffs which lead up to some drums and melodic clean singing that later evolves into high pitched black metal screams and the music also adds in elements for other genres of dark music and mid way into the song the music gets more fast and primitive sounding along with some blast beats as well as the vocals adding in more depressive elements and then going for more of a mid paced direction but also reverting back to the faster parts at times.
'Skazka" begins with some clean playing and drums and serves as an intro for the next song with the length only being slightly over a minute.
"Life Thrones" begins with some powerful bass guitar leads and drums and after a few seconds melodic clean singing comes into the song before going into a more heavy and depressive direction along with some faster riffing and blast beats which leads up to some black metal screams and then the song goes into a slower direction and adds in some deep demonic growls but focusing more on black metal and then the song starts switching back and forth between slow and fast parts and towards the end the melodic vocals make a return to the song.
"Venetian Ceruse" begins with some heavy bass guitar playing and drums and serves as an intro for the next song.
"Glass Farm" begins with some melodic bass guitar riffing and drums and then goes into a more fast and primitive direction along with some blast beats which leads up to some grim screams and then the music starts switching back and forth between slow and fast parts
Song lyrics cover dark and depressive themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, dark and heavy sound for being a self released recording where you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this ep along with the first song being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Barren Oak are a very great sounding experimental, depressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Blissful Self Violence" and "Life Thrones". RECOMMENDED BUY.
