Gloom are a band from Finland that plays a very raw, melodic, suicidal and melancholic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Rider Of the Last Light" which will be released in June by Spread Evil.
Gun sounds start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams.
Most of the music is very heavily rooted in the 90's and 2000's era while the songs also add in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. At times the music also gets very melancholic and suicidal sounding along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody as well as the vocals also having their deeper and more aggressive moments. When guitar leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic and old school style and all of the music also sticks to a heavier direction.
Gloom plays a style of black metal that is very raw, melodic, old school and traditional sounding along with some melancholic and suicidal touches. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover suicide, death, murder, melancholic, anti religion and black metal themes.
In my opinion Gloom are a very raw, melodic, melancholic, suicidal and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Iron Claws Of Black Metal" "No Mercy After Sunset" and "Rider Of The Last Light". 8 out of 10.
