Avlid are a duo from Sweden that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Ond Brad Dod" which will be released on June by Void Wanderer and War Productions.
Ambient style soundscapes and synths start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction. Most of the riffing is also very heavily rooted in the Nordic style while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and the music also mixes both the heavy and atmospheric parts together.
Dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of the riffing while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with some tortured cries, whispers and screams also being utilized briefly. The songs also add in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the guitar leads being done in very melodic style when they are utilized, all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them and as the album progresses a couple of ambient instrumentals can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover darkness, death, depression and poetic themes.
In my opinion Avlid are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Drap dig sjalv" "Skri" and "Yersinia pestis". 8 out of 10.
