Aeterna Tenebrae are a duo from France that plays a pagan form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Maledic aeternum" which was released in 2019 by Ossuaire Records.
A very epic keyboard orientated sound starts off the album while also adding in a touch of folk music before going into a heavier direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the vocals being mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
The riffs also add in a great amount of melody while the keyboards also capture a very medieval atmosphere at times. The songs also add in a decent amount of 90's influences along with the faster sections of the music also adding in some tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more off a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with one track also introducing clean pagan vocals onto the album and half of the songs are very long and epic in length and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard on a couple of tracks The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in French and cover Paganism and Dark Poetry themes.
In my opinion Aeterna Tenebrae are a very great sounding pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Horniest patronis" and :Destruction salutaire". 8 out of 10.
