France's Ysengrin have returned with a new recording which continues the experimental and occult mixture of black, dark and doom metal from their previous releases and this is a review of their 2020 album "Initiatio" which will be released in July by I, Voidhanger Records.
Acoustic guitars start off the album while the music also brings in 2 bass guitars and makes them the lead instrument. When keyboards are utilized they also give the songs more of an atmospheric feeling while the vocals also add in a good mixture of deep growls and grim black metal screams.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while one of the tracks is an instrumental that also introduces bones and bells onto the recording which also enhances the ritualistic atmosphere of the album. Elements of doom and dark metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs.
Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the music also adding in a great amount of 90's era Greek and Italian black metal influences. One song also introduces spoken word parts onto the recording as well as the music also having its experimental moments, as the album progresses a brief use of fast playing and blast beats can also be heard and a later track also adds in a brief use of chants. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics are written in French and cover Alchemy, Hermeticism, Esotericism and Ancient Times.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ysengrin and if you are a fan of experimental, occult black, dark and doom metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Potencee d'Or" "Memorables (G. de Nerval - extraits)" and "Monumentum". 8 out of 10.
