Herxheim are a solo project from Texas that plays an old school mixture of black, doom and death metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Incised Arrival" which will be released i July by I, Voidhanger Records.
Horror movie style keyboards start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction. Vocals are mostly high pitched blackened metal screams while the music also brings in a great amount of mid 80's to early 90's influences while the slower sections of the songs bring in elements of doom metal.
A great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length while the bass guitar takes place of a regular guitar which is mostly absent as the lead instrument. Dark sounding melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing along with one song also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Touches of death metal are also added into some parts of the recording along with some tracks also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, melodic yet old school guitar leads can also be heard briefly on a couple of tracks and more whispered vocals can also be heard as the album progresses. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics are Mephisto fables revolving around the human condition and tales of warning and wrath.
In my opinion Herxheim are a very great sounding old school mixture of black, doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wanton of Idols" and "Warning master Love". 8 out of 10.
