Australia's solo project Chagrin has expanded into a duo with a member from Norway and have returned with a new recording which continues the atmospheric style of post black metal from previous releases and this is a review of his self released 2020 album "You Can't Be Happiness".
Train sounds start off the album before going into a heavier direction while t he guitar solos and leads bring in a very melodic post metal style. Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams along with the music also mixing atmospheric elements into the heavier sections of the songs.
All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while keyboards are also utilized at times. All of the drums are done with a real drum kit this time around along with one track also introducing spoken word parts onto the recording as well as a couple of the songs also being very long and epic in length.
Field recordings. samples, rain and thunder sounds can also be heard briefly and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard as well as all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo style. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Chagrin and if you are a fan of atmospheric and depressive post black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "You Can't Be Happiness' and "Lost Way". 8 out of 10.
