Ilathar are a solo project from Austria that plays an ambient and folk orientated form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2019 ep "A Vessel Of Echoes".
Acoustic guitar playing starts off the ep before going into a heavier direction while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style and most of the tracks are also instrumentals.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams when they are utilized. Elements of folk music can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with the synths also added in touches of dark ambient when they are utilized.
All of the tracks also sounds very different from each other, when tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling and some tracks also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover depression, death and nature themes.
In my opinion Ilathar are a very great sounding ambient and folk orientated black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Hoarfrost" "Mysticism Of The Death" and "The Abyss In me". 8 out of 10.
