Valravne are a solo project from Asheville, North Carolina that plays a very aggressive, depressive and misanthropic form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2020 ep "Some Kind Of Vampire".
Spoken word samples and clean playing start off the ep before going into a heavier musical direction. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them along with the music also having its depressive moments as well as some clean playing also returning on the later tracks and the ep closes with a synth orientated ambient track.
Valravne plays a style of black metal that is very depressive, atmospheric, raw and misanthropic sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover existentialism, depression and nihilism themes.
In my opinion Valravne are a very great sounding aggressive, depressive and misanthropic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Contempt For All Humankind" and "Vada In My Ecafe". 8 out of 10.
