Devil City Cult are a band from Spain that plays a mixture of raw black metal and hardcore punk with some touches of experimental noise and this is a review of their self released 2020 ep "World's True Enemies".
A very fast and raw sound starts off the ep along with a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them as well the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody.
The music also captures the raw aggression of punk rock. The songs also add in a great amount of 90's era second wave influences but done in a more modern style along with some elements of hardcore also being added into the mid tempo sections of the songs and throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they remain true to an old school style and as the ep progresses a touch of experimental noise can also be heard as well as one track also adding in a brief use of synths and spoken word samples. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover madness, violence, terror and death themes.
In my opinion Devil City Cult are a very great sounding mixture of raw black metal and hardcore punk and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Scythe" and "Big bad Wolves". 8 out of 10.
