Grimmdrasil are a solo project from Oklahoma that plays a psychedelic form of black metal and this is a review of his unreleased 2004 album "Hybernium" which was released on cassette in 2015 by Merdumgiriz.
A very dark, heavy and experimental black metal sound starts off the album along with some melodic guitar leads and grim screams that also get very deep at times and after awhile psychedelic elements are added into the music and avant garde sound effects along with acoustic guitars are added into the music at times.
Synths and spoken word can be heard in certain sections of the recording and when the music speeds up blast beats can be heard and drones and melodies can be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length as well as a brief use of clean singing.
All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and the music also adds in elements of classical at times and the faster riffs bring in elements of raw black metal and all of the tracks are very diverse and sound different from each other and as the album progresses the vocals start adding in more high pitched screams and deep growls and the music sticks mostly to a slow or mid paced musical direction.
Grimmdrasil plays a style of black metal that also mixes in experimental, progressive, and psychedelic elements and while the album was recorded in 2004 it still sounded very much ahead of its time, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Grimmdrasil are a very great sounding psychedelic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Cold" "Grim" and "The Wines Of Silenoz". 8 out of 10.
