Morkulv are a band from Spain that plays a very raw and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their 2014 album "Where Hollowness Dwells" which was released as a joint effort between Satanath Records, Dark East Productions, Metal Throne Productions and Metal Of Crypt.
Evil sounding synths and bells start off the album along with some grim whispers and after the intro the music goes into a very fast and raw black metal direction along with some high pitched screams while also keeping around the synths and when solos and leads are utilized they are very dark, distorted and melodic sounding.
A great amount of blast beats can be heard in the faster sections of the music and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and clean playing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and when spoken word parts are utilized they enhance the grim atmosphere of the songs along with the keyboards getting more epic.
As the album progresses and one track also brings in a few seconds of acoustic guitars while a later track brings in a few seconds of melodic clean singing and the music also goes back to the early 90's of the 90's where they started mixing in keyboards with a more raw black metal style while the music is still very much guitar driven.
Morkulv plays a style of black metal that is very raw and rooted in the early 90's which they mix in with a keyboard sound that also gives the music a feeling or a horror movie soundtrack, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness and horror themes.
In my opinion Morkulv are a very great sounding raw and atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Red, Dark, Infinite" 'Where Hollowness Dwells" "Conjuration - A Blood Ritual" and "Iron Throb". 8 out of 10.
